later we were afraid of the Spanish and Portugisian conquerors,
of the Ottoman expansion,
then of Napoleon and France,
follwed by the British Empire,
then it came the fear of the Nazis,
next, we were afraid of the Soviet Union,
followed by fear of religious fanatics of all kinds,
and also from unscrupulous bankers and egoists.
Today we are afraid of the United States of America.
